Kid Fashion - Best Buys

I like my kids to look cute. I like to not spend a fortune on their clothes. I like their clothes to last not only until they outgrow them, but until their younger sibling does! I don't ask for much, do I? Here are some tips and deals I've discovered to make my kid fashion goals possible. Check back on future Fridays, too, because I'll share more exciting kid fashion tips, like the beauty and durability of the smocked dress and how to find it cheap!

For Girls:
Check out these little girl shoes, so cute and for a great price or these in the leopard print.

If you are looking for little girl jeans, these from Target are great, super cheap. They are the soft denim which my little princess will wear without complaining that "they hurt" as she does for regular denim jeans!

Now this is not on sale, but I cannot say enough about tulle skirts (ballerina tutu style) for little girls. My daughter has a couple (one found on sale at Gymboree a little while back and one found on Ebay) and you can pair them with t-shirts like this one or this one for an easy, cute look. My daughter gets tons of compliments when she wears her "ballerina skirts", not to mention how much fun she has twirling around in them!

Your daughter can start wearing her spring and summer dresses and skirts even if the weather is still a little chilly when you pair them with leggings and a sweater. We have these eyelet leggings and they are my favorite. They go with all my daughter's dresses and do you know the best part? They are white, so you can totally bleach pen away any stains! Not that my little princess would ever have grass stains on her knees or anything! She wore hers last winter and this winter because if they are a little short it is just like capri leggings, so I got my money's worth!

These capri pants are fun for spring and can be paired with a long sleeve or short sleeve t-shirt.

For Boys:
For toddler boys, these Stride Rite shoes are a steal at $19.99 marked down from $34.00. My toddler wore these all winter and I loved them for casual or with khakis for church.

Now, I'm all about great buys for kid clothes, but only to the extent that I'm still getting good quality. I have two boys and I would like to be able to reuse most of my 1st son's clothes for his little brother. I have found that the Ralph Lauren short sleeve polo shirts wear much better than a Gap or Old Navy one. Sorry Gap and Old Navy, but you just fade so much that you wear out before my 1st child even outgrows you! I only buy the Ralph Lauren stuff when it is on sale and then it is only a little more than the other brands. For example, these solid polos are on sale for $19.99 and this stripe polo and this stripe polo are on sale for $22.99.

Also, these long sleeve t-shirts are on sale for $9.99. I may buy a couple for next winter! And short-sleeve are already on sale for $7.99, marked down from $18.00 -- such a deal!

Before the Old Navy people leave me nasty comments, I must say, I don't have quality problems with all Old Navy stuff. My son has worn their jeans all winter and they still look great and they come in slim, which he needs! So, if you need boy jeans check these out, they are even on sale!

Now here is some quality for a low price! These pull-on cargo shorts from Children's Place are awesome! My 1 year-old and 5 year-old both had a couple pairs they wore all last summer and fall and they did not wear out! They are easy on and off with no buttons and look great with t-shirts or collar shirts.

What it is like having 3 kids – Part 3

This picture of my kids a little over a year ago says a thousand words about what it is like having 3 kids! My 13 thoughts about this picture:

1. How sweet it is to see them loving on each other!
2. This momma was too tired to care that the bigger kids had climbed in the pack n' play with the baby.
3. This momma was just glad they were all quiet for a few seconds.
4. The screaming began seconds after this picture was taken!
5. This momma was having a good day because all 3 kids are actually dressed in something other than pajamas!
   
6. A 3rd child does not get much alone time!
   
7. You never get tired of pictures of the 3 of them together!
   
8. This pack n' play was actually this poor 3rd child's only bed for a few months until his big sister was out of the real crib!
9. A baby with a big sister gets tons of kisses! My daughter ran around saying, "Tiss him! Tiss him!" for the first several months after we brought her baby brother home.
   
10. When your 3 little kids are no longer right under your feet and you head off to look for them, take along your camera because chances are what you find will be picture-worthy!
11. The weight limit on the pack n' play must be 90+ pounds!
    
12. All 3 kids contained = a beautiful thing!
13. Lord, thank you for the blessing of them!

Works for me Wednesday: A Timer

Does it ever feel like your kids are moving in slow motion? Do you have trouble enforcing the time limit in a time-out? How about sharing? Ever have trouble getting one kid to let his siblings have a turn with a particularly popular toy?

Enter the timer. Parents, it is your friend!

Here are the ways we use it to work for us:

1. When our oldest is in the shower he would be in there for 20 minutes if it were up to him, but considering this is longer than I even get in the shower, we needed to reign it in. Also, he is sometimes slow about getting in the shower. So we'll start the shower and then start the timer, say for 6 or 7 minutes. He must be showered and get out when the timer goes off or there is a consequence (either loss of a bedtime story or loss of a level on the privilege chart -- see this post for explaination).

2. For our kids younger than around 4 years old we don't use the privilege chart for consequences, but rather time-out. When the child is in the time-out spot, the timer is set for 3 minutes if the child is 3 years old, 2 minutes if they are 2 years old, etc. The child cannot come out until the timer goes off. The timer is more accurate than a distracted parent may be enforcing the time limit. Also, the child cannot argue or plead with the timer to come out sooner, but they can try that with the parent.

3. My kids have some toys that are their own that live in their rooms and that they can choose to share or not share. Of course they are encouraged to share, especially if they ever want to get to play with a toy from their sibling's room. But, the majority are community toys that are housed in the playroom. These are to be shared. It never fails that there will be times that even in a room full of toys they will want to play with the same one toy at the same time. They are not allowed to grab a toy away from someone, and must wait their turn. The problem with this comes in when one child is hogging the toy. That is where the timer comes in. I will ask that child how much longer before they will be ready to share the toy. If they answer something longer than 5 minutes then I will have them try again, because that is not really the spirit of sharing at this young age. If they do not agree on a reasonable time then they will loose the toy. But if a time is agreed on then the timer is set for those minutes and when it goes off the child must pass the toy on to the other child who wanted it. If they refuse to share at that time, then they will either loose a privilege or have a time out.

One more thing about the timer, our firstborn is THAT child who will test the limits. So, he has tried his hand at resetting the timer for longer or shorter depending on which situation it was used in and which way benefited him. There are big consequences for this! That is not tolerated and is sneaky behavior on par with lying.

And Then He Was Six

Dear Beloved Firstborn Son on your 6th birthday,
Watching you grow up has been one of the greatest blessings of my life! These six years have passed so quickly. You are one-third of the way to eighteen and there is so much I want to say to you, to teach you, to do with you before then!

You are so smart and strong-willed. You love to be in charge and have to be often reminded that you are not the boss! You are a great challenge and a great joy all in one! Although your spirit must be reined in, I am glad it is there and know that if we can channel it for good, God is going to use it for some awesome things!

You are always in a good mood, which is not to say you don't have melt-downs and outbursts but you get over it quickly and for that I am grateful. You are a morning person, even though Daddy and I are not we can appreciate this quality in you and it was so helpful for early swim practice this past summer!

You love dressing up. From pirate, to jedi knight to fireman to cowboy all in one afternoon; it is very fun to watch! I never know what I'm going to see come down the stairs! I know God is going to do something amazing and fabulous with your life and I just can't wait to see!

You are a great big brother! I love that I am helping you write a book and you are dedicating it to your little sister! You are your baby brother's hero; he wants to be just like you! I love watching how enthusiastically he greets you when we pick you up at school. I pray that they will be your best friends forever and that you will continue to love them and be a blessing for them for the rest of your life.

Your faith in God is amazing and it enriches my faith to witness. Just a few weeks ago you were feeling sick and I overheard you praying for God to heal you. You believe He can and that is a faith beyond your age. You prayed for a baby sister before she was born. To our surprise you first wanted a baby sister, not a baby brother! And God heard your prayers. Then before we were even pregnant or had decided we wanted to be pregnant with a 3rd child, you prayed for a baby brother. Our faith was smaller than yours as your daddy and I worried how to tell you if it turned out to be a baby sister, but a brother he was. As soon as we told you, I'll never forget what you said, "I prayed a lot of days for a baby brother!" You knew to give God the glory and be thankful for an answered prayer. Your faith, it makes me a better person! I pray your relationship with God will grow with each new day, year, and season of your life. I pray that you will seek Him, follow Him, rely on Him, and glorify Him all the days of your life!

It is a privilege to be your mom!

Not Me! Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! In this blog carnival created by MckMama everyone has fun telling all the things they DID NOT do (but really did). You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week. Here are my denials:

My firstborn DID NOT turn six yesterday. That would make me too old! He is NOT still my baby!

I DID NOT have roughly 15 five and six year old boys in my backyard for two hours for the party. It DID NOT really feel like 30 five and six year old boys. There was NOT bloodshed or water balloons!

I DID NOT make this lightsaber cake for his party, complete with from scratch icing. I know my uncraftiness and would NOT have attempted this. It was NOT almost 5 feet long! That would be cake craziness!

I DID NOT skip my weekly Scripture Sharing Sunday blog post due to all the time spent working on said cake. That would mean my priorities were a little off. Which is NEVER the case!

I DID NOT eat 4 pieces of that cake this weekend!

I DID NOT actually wear this Star Wars Ventress costume for several hours on Saturday in front of various friends and family. My husband DID NOT wear this Obi Wan costume making us the odd combination of the dark and light side couple. My son DID NOT love us wearing the costumes and look adorable in his Anakin costume and thus make it all worth while!

My husband DID NOT at any point in the party, stand on our roof and hurl foil ball meteors down at the kids!

I DID NOT have the realization that of all the Oscar Nominated movies this year, I'd seen one -- Wall-E. I DO NOT officialy feel lame, out of touch, and like I've been hiding under a rock (otherwise known as 3 little kids)! Somehow I'm NOT okay with this.

They Grow Up Too Fast

My daughter is 3 years and 6 months old, but a few days ago we had the following conversation. She said, "I'm getting ready to turn 4. Do I look 4?" I said, "But you're supposed to be my baby!" She said, "I will still be your baby even when I be 4." "Oh good!" I replied, and then she said, "Every number I am I will still be your baby." So sweet, I could just eat her up!!!

Then she ran in the bathroom to potty and before closing the door she stuck her head out and yelled to her brothers, "I NEED PRIVACY BECAUSE I HAVE A CROTCH!"

Like I said, sweet. And growing up way too fast!

While we're on the subject of little girls growing up too fast. What is up with Barbie? I didn't think I was one of those moms that would be anti-Barbie and really I'm not, but my daughter has just started playing with them and recently as I was helping her dress one I just thought, "Wow, Barbie is rather voluptuous, is that really necessary?"

I'm not banning Barbie from our house or anything, but for Valentine's Day, I got my girl her first Hearts Club Doll and it is so cute! It is very sweet looking and soft-bodied which is a nice change from the rubber Barbie body. They seem to be roughly the same price and size of Barbies. I had no idea this was an alternative, I grew up with Barbies. So, I'm just passing on what I've learned to you, my invisible friends -- Hearts Club Dolls = sweet, soft, flat-chested alternative to Barbie!



I'll leave you with this image that I found while trying to find a kinder, gentler version of Barbie. Am I the only one who finds this disturbing?


Yes, Barbie seems to be getting attacked by The Birds! The recommended age is 5 and up for this happy doll! My husband thought this was hilarious. I think he wants one! I, on the other hand, stand by my initial reaction --- DISTURBING! If I were not worn out from mothering all these kids, I might even loose some sleep over an image like that!

Life Without a Microwave

I survived 4 weeks without a microwave! Can you believe it, me the modern-invention-loving, “I’ll only go camping if I can have a hot shower every day” girl roughing it without a microwave for 4 whole weeks?! I feel like I should be awarded a merit badge or something!

Do you know what is really weird? I hardly missed it! It was not at all like the month without a dishwasher that I had a year ago, that was sorely missed MANY times a day. Mostly with the dishwasher I missed not having a place to hide the dirty dishes while they were waiting to be washed. I often thought about still using the dishwasher as a holding cabinet for the dirty dishes, but it just seemed wrong to load the dishwasher, unload dirty dishes and hand-wash them! Anyway it was a terrible series of episodes with a company our home warranty contracted with and their ability to more than two times order the wrong parts!

I digress, back to the microwave, I actually did not even call the repair company until 3 ½ weeks in. I just didn’t get around to it, so obviously the pain of microwave loss was not that unbearable!

Did you know you can make nearly everything on the stove? This was news to me! Reheating leftovers? Just throw them in a pan and turn on the burner for a few minutes! Popcorn? All you do is put some oil and those kernels in a pot with a lid and it POPS in like less time than the microwave and no burnt popcorn smell permeating the house for days after! Amazing!

One-on-One Time With Kids

Having one-on-one time with my kids is important to me. There are 3 of them and my husband works full-time and then some, we have no nanny or regular babysitter, so it is a challenge, but so worth the effort!

Having special time dedicated to one child helps me learn about who they are as individuals, shows them how important they are to me, gives them undivided attention, and is a lot of fun! I get to do a puzzle of the United States with my 5 year old without having to stop every 20 seconds to rebuild part of the country that my toddler has bulldozed through. I get to play dollhouse with my 3 year-old without her older brother telling us how to play with them and without my 1 year-old stealing the little dolls. I really think this regular alone time with Mommy helps my children be more patient when they do have to share my attention!

So, how to do it? Remember I am all about good advice but one of my pet peeves is somebody telling you it is a good idea to do something without telling me how, like when an allergist told me to keep my then 2 year-old son’s arm still for 15 minutes during his allergy skin test. How exactly do you propose I do that Doctor?

My oldest gets at least 15-20 min. each day with me after school when I send his younger sister and brother to play outside on our patio where I can see them through the window. He and I look over his papers from school, talk about his day, and he has a snack and does his homework. He also gets alone time by going on errands with Mom or Dad over the weekends or when we take him to friend’s birthday parties where only he is invited.

My 3 year-old gets about 20 minutes of alone time with mom where we play dolls and read books before her naptime after I’ve already put my 1 year-old down for a nap and while my 5 year-old is at school. Somedays I will feed my toddler early and put him down for an early nap so my 3 year-old and I can have a tea party lunch just the two of us. She also gets the alone time with a parent during errands or birthday parties where only she is invited.

I get alone time with my youngest the 2 mornings each week that both his older sibs. are in school. Now, I just need to work on it being more quality-sitting-on-the-floor-playing time, rather than he-is-sitting-in–the-cart-while-I-shop time!

My husband and I occasionally have dates with our kids individually on the weekends when the other 2 kids will stay home with the other parent. Also, we’ve allowed one child to stay up 30 minutes past bedtime to have one-on-one time with Mom & Dad playing a game.

God Knows I Am Inadequate!

I always feel behind. I am constantly thinking how I can get more time. Several months ago I wrote out how much time per day I'd ideally spend on every activity (preparing meals, dressing kids, housework, exercise, playing with kids, time with husband, quiet time, volunteer work, errands, sleep, taking kids to school and activities, etc., etc.) and added it all up.

The result = 27 hrs. and 30 min.!

That is how much time I need in a day to live up to my own standards! Needless to say, it takes a lot of God for me not to constantly feel like I am failing, because I am in some area all the time! If you are going to squeeze 27 hours and 30 minutes worth of stuff into 24 hours, something, or rather several somethings are going to suffer and all the things on my list are important, necessary things (there is no Oprah, no Days of our Lives, not even a daily hair washing)!

Exodus 16: 4, “Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.'”

Gather a day’s portion every day! That is what I should be doing, not just to sustain life for that very day, but in obedience to God, to walk in His instruction!

Each day should be about what God has for me to do, learn, accomplish, and be for Him! It is not about my agenda! And thank God for that because my agenda is unattainable!

The Bible says in 2 Cor. 3:5-6 that God knows I am inadequate, but my adequacy comes from Him. I pray I will more fully give my agenda to Him each day and spend the 24 hours He gives me in service and obedience to Him. Oh, that He may some day say, “Well done good and faithful servant . . .” Matt. 25:23.

Not Me! Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! In this blog carnival created by MckMama everyone has fun telling all the things they DID NOT do (but really did). You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week. Here are mine, or at least the ones I can think of while in the midst of Monday morning madness!

I DID NOT order over the internet this Star Wars Ventress costume to dress up in for my son’s Star Wars themed 6th birthday party. I DO NOT love my firstborn that much to put on such a hideous (an by the looks of it revealing) costume and become a bald scary woman! Oh, let’s hope a tank top underneath will provide enough modesty to pull this off!

I DID NOT carry my 20 month old son into my daughter's preschool wearing only a shirt and diaper with no pants, due to an unfortunate diaper incident while running errands and my lack of having a suitable extra set of clothes in the car, and by suitable I mean not one of his sister's dresses! I DID NOT actually seriously entertain the idea of dressing him in the dress!

I DID NOT buy all store bought Valentines for my kids’ classmates. I DID NOT remember last year where we did homemade Valentines and my kids were excited for the first couple and then I had to finish the other 23 after they’d gone to bed and I DID NOT attempt to make them look like they were created by a child! No, that would be deceptive!

I DID NOT, especially after posting this about how much I love reading to my kids, actually speed read my daughter’s favorite book, Pinkalicious, one day before her nap, because I was in such a hurry to get naptime started! My daughter DID NOT think all my super fast reading was funny and actually request it again.

I DID NOT, have to say to my 5 year-old at a restaurant, "Even if it tastes good, we still don't lick the table!"

Sunday Scripture Sharing - Family Devotional #7

Before I get into this week's devotional, if you did not do last week's Devotional #6. I'd really encourage you to do it. Even though Valentine's Day is over, all year long we should be working on saying kind things to others, especially those who live in our own homes! I will admit that last Sunday was busy for me and the kids acted terrible during dinner and after dinner when we would normally do the devotional I told my husband I just didn't have the energy. I didn't feel like doing it, like trying to teach kids who were just being silly. But, he encouraged me that we should and I was so blessed. I was blown away by how much the kids enjoyed and got into the process of writing nice things about each other! They were so enthusiastic about it, my 3 year-old even wanted to write one for the dog!

Today's Topic is:

God will never leave you

Introduction
What does it mean if someone leaves you? (possible answers are "they go away" or "you don't see them anymore") Sometimes somebody leaves and you don't notice right away, but then when you need them you'll suddenly notice they are gone and miss them. How would you feel if you knew there was someone who would never leave you, no matter what you do or where you go?

Activity
Set various items on a tray or cookie sheet (like a small stuffed animal, a paper clip, a toothbrush, a small piece of colored paper, an eraser, a clothespin, etc.). Ask the children to look carefully at all the items, then take the tray away and remove one item. Come back and ask them to tell which object left. Repeat one item at a time until everything is gone.

Scripture

1 Samuel 12:22, "The Lord will not abandon His people"

Psalms 94:14, "The Lord will not abandon His people."

Discussion
Abandon is another word for leave. So the Bible is telling us that God (or the Lord) will not leave us! We are His people if we believe in Him and He does not abandon His people. Isn't that awesome! No matter what, God will never leave us, like all the things on the tray. Sometimes it may feel like the Lord has left you, maybe if something bad happens, but He is there even in the bad times. You can talk to Him by praying any time you want.

Prayer
Dear God, thank you that you will never leave us. Help us to remember that we can always talk to you when we are happy, scared, sad, worried, lonely or anytime! Amen

Kid Fashion - Rodeo Edition

Just as soon as Valentine's ends it is time to gear up for Rodeo! Granted we live in Texas, but believe it or not, we don't dress like this every day. However it is fun to dress like a cowboy or cowgirl every now and then, especially for kids! So, I'm here to help you outfit your little buckaroos!

The first place I start is Ebay. My daughter's outfit pictured above was completely from Ebay. The boots were around $10, the skirt $8, and the shirt says "Cowgirl" on the front is Gymboree brand, but was around $9 on Ebay. Do searches on "kids cowboy boots", "cowgirl boots", etc.. If you want to narrow further you can also add your child's size. Do the same kind of searches for skirts, shirts. For boys, search on "western shirt" and you can get a cute cowboy shirt to combine with jeans, cowboy boots, and a hat to get an outfit like this one below on my son.

Another cute option for a "Go Western Event" is this dress on sale. It is adorable with the red bows and the cowboy & cowgirl print! My daughter has a couple of these Josiekat's Trunk bow dresses in different prints (also bought on sale) and they are fabulous. So comfy and the white t-shirt top is easy to clean with bleach pen should she get any stains on it! Also, once it gets too short for a dress, you can use it as a top and pair it with jeans, for literally years of wear! Talk about value! Nothing I've bought for my boys has ever made it past 9 months or so before it hits the too small bin.

For a little girl, this blue jean overall dress is another fun western outfit idea. The great thing about this is that it could be worn with a short sleeve shirt for warm weather or long sleeve shirt and tights for cold weather. For a little boy there are these shortalls or these overalls.

A Texas Baby in Colorado

What happens when you take a Texas baby on vacation to Colorado and set him in the snow?



Almost exactly a year ago when my youngest was 10 months old, we took our first family vacation to Colorado. It was an awesome, fun, memory-filled trip, but 3 kids and mittens and hats and boots and multiple layers of clothes was just too much for this Texas mom to deal with! I tip my rarely used winter hat to you Northern moms! We definitely have it easier here in the south -- until Hurricane season that is!
