The Hair Incident Revisited

I was just today telling a friend this story and we had a good laugh over it. And although the humor of the event was not lost on me 7 months ago (really it wasn't!), it is way funnier now in retrospect!

Originally published December 15, 2009:

My little 4 year old girl loves crafts. The other morning before preschool she insisted she needed to make some stuff. She got out the construction paper, the tape, and asked me to get the kid scissors. None of this was unusual. Crafting is a daily or twice daily occurrence around here. As I unloaded the dishwasher she brought me various crowns and bracelets she'd made. The rate at which she produces crafts is actually pretty amazing!

Then I took the toddler upstairs to get him dressed. As I headed upstairs I told my daughter to come too so she could get dressed. She said she just needed to finish her craft. I said, "Okay, but just a couple more minutes."

I headed upstairs and a couple minutes later as I was brushing the toddler's teeth, she brings me this:

Since I was in the midst of the toddler teeth-brushing and I'd already looked at and praised more than one craft already that morning, at first I just kinda glanced at it.

Then I did a double-take.

"Is that hair?!!!!"

"Is that your hair taped on top of the little white paper?!!!"

"Did you cut your own hair?!!!"

The answers were yes, yes, and yes.

I think I knew this day would come. I've heard enough kids-cutting-their-hair stories that I knew having 3 kids it was inevitable that 1 of them would do it at some point.

Thankfully she didn't cut off much, she has long hair, is probably due for a haircut anyway, and you can't really tell unless you're looking for the spot!

So I ask, am I done?

Or is it like the Chicken Pox where if you have a mild case you could maybe get it again?

Just in case, I did deliver a long lecture filled with all the reasons we only let Ms. Sarah cut our hair with extra emphasis on just how long it takes hair to grow and that if she made it look funny, then it might just have to look that way for a while.

I must say, though, I do appreciate that she's already scrap-booked the event for me!!

  1. Oh that's funny. Just the other day my 8 year old had a little fly away from sleeping so I said to go wet it down before church. He comes back later, it's gone, all good.
After church I'm starring at the side of his head and there is an "almost" bald spot where that "fly away" used to be. Yes, instead of combing it down he cut it off! OY! He got a lecture too.
    Have a great weekend.

  2. How funny that she made a craft out of it!! I have 5 kids and thank the Lord they never cut their hair, but my niece cut her bangs, all the way to the scalp!! She didn't have bangs forever!! It was awful and her mom is a hairdresser, LOL

Thanks for the laughter!! I came by from Kim's Friday Funnies!! I'm now a follower, YAY!! Come by my blog if you get a chance!!

    Love and Blessings

  3. LOL..oh yeah! I DO remember the hair cutting incident...we had one too. My son cut his hair in 3 LARGE places, right down to the scalp (without actually hurting himself). He was so excited. The only way I could "fix it" was to actually shave his head bald...which I THOUGHT would be a punishment (enough for him to never want to do that again). He watched in the mirror as I shaved his head...HUGE grin on his face. And afterward, ran around all happy and thrilled that he was bald. It was summer, he was 4, it grew back in time for Christmas photos, lol.

  4. I think that's one of my favorite stories of yours. I still chuckle that she made a craft out of it. Lol! It's like she showcased the evidence for all eternity. Definitely needs to have holes punched in it so I can go in the scrapbook!

    Have a great weekend!

  5. Love it! I was the one that cut my hair as a kid. I remember begging my mom not to tell my dad!

  6. My daughter is 4 and just cut her hair for the THIRD TIME!! Apparently, my lectures the first two times fell on deaf ears. :) Not only this last time did she cut HER hair, but she also cut her little brother's. Hers faired better than his, trust me. Hers actually ended up cuter than before. Since the last cutting, she had finally grown it out a ways and evidentally I hadn't noticed it was long enough to cut into a very cute, stylish bob. However, we now refer to my poor son as "Patches". hee hee

  7. LOL! A rite of passage. My son never did it, but my friends and I did. One cut mine and the other girl's. Then it was her turn. She took one look at us and ran, LOL!

    Have a JESUS-filled day! ^i^

  8. Not to be a bearer of bad news, but the day before my Junior picture day at school I cut my own bangs. Very, very, very short. Not intentionally, mind you. I'd keep an eye on her and the scissors!

  9. Oh no! Well at least she wasn't offering her "barber" services to the rest of the family!
